ACTIVE ROAD MARKING SYSTEMS for TRAFFIC SAFETY

A.R.M.S. PROJECT BACKGROUND

On virtually all the modern roads and highways driver assistance accessories are widely used. The driver needs to see the road during day or night, through fog, heavy rain or snow and currently the most common means of providing road information to the driver is to use road marking paint and passive-reflective accessories. This system, virtually unchanged for decades, has severe limitations when the road visibility is poor, and many accidents occur by drivers who leave the road at high speed.

The reflective accessories are currently used directly on the pavement or above the road surface on separating walls and delineators. Rain, snow, fog and other bad weather conditions severely affect these devices by reducing the reflective capacity, and hence increasing the risk of traffic accidents. The effectiveness of the current passive reflective accessories depends on the car's headlights intensity and the reflection angle is very limited, hence at turns the driver is unable to see the reflective devices from the same distance as he would on a straight road.

Two years ago, we started studying replacement of the passive-reflective elements with an active illuminating device and we built several prototype units. The first units we tested continuously emitted light. To save power we modified the concept and in the new versions we tested blinking lights. Visibility was as good as with continuous light and the power consumption was substantially reduced, but the test drivers found it confusing to see several independent blinking lights in front of them. The third and current phase of the design - which has been filed for patent protection - adds synchronization of the markers and is able to effectively point the direction of the road in bad weather.

The current system is capable of activating the units in various modes, as continuously illuminating, all units blink or a running light pattern, according to the specific application. The color of the signal can be changed to indicate a specific road condition.
